Taking Time Out to Prevent Eye Injuries

"Traumatic eye injury remains the second most common cause of visual impairment, behind only cataracts. Each year nearly 15% of the 2.5 million eye injuries in the United States occur during sporting activities.1 Of these injuries, 42,000 are severe enough to warrant an emergency department visit and approximately 13,500 result in legal blindness."

Individuals who are particularly high risk for eye injuries are those who participate in sports that involve hard and/or fast-moving projectiles. And even though sports such as racquetball, tennis and Pickleball seem relatively harmless, these balls can travel at high speeds making them dangerous projectiles. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports across the US, especially among active adults so that more and more players are becoming involved in the sport, putting them at risk for eye injuries. No matter what age, preventing eye injuries to insure the gift of sight as we age has been a great concern among active athletes.

" It has been estimated that greater than 90% of eye injuries can be prevented by the use of protective eye wear. However, not all available eye wear protects against trauma. In fact, athletes using “street wear” (i.e., corrective eye wear and/or sunglasses) may be at higher risk of sustaining an eye injury than those without eye protection.” Sports goggles that are specifically designed for racquet/paddle sports and have been certified by the governing agencies such as the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment are among the safest options currently available. When choosing eyewear for a sport like Pickleball, be sure the lenses are shatter-resistant, polycarbonate and/or Trivex lenses that offer substantial protection against most projectiles you will encounter while playing. The lenses should have a scratch-resistant coating on the front and back for increased durability.

Playing outdoors is another factor to consider. Be sure the lenses have built-in UVA and UVB protection, especially in areas where the sun is intense.

Also, consider the frames. They should be constructed of highly impact-resistant plastic or polycarbonate and come with rubber padding to cushion the frame where it comes in contact with the face.

Having fun and being active means being aware of the dangers you might encounter with any sport. Pickleball, although it seems relatively harmless, can pose the same dangers as any other sport with fast-moving projectiles. Be careful and safe. Wear protective eyewear that will keep you insure you are able to see the best things in life for years to come. Enjoy your sport SAFELY!
